Dear Vijay, Thanks for the photo. Great find indeed. I shall certainly include this in our book since this is the first confirmed record of the Lesser Fish-Eagle in SW India. It shows yet once more the importance of close observation and not mere looking and going on!! regards, sincerely, satish

Dear Vijay
It certainly looks like a Lesser Fish Eagle to me - the tail does appear all dark and the first shot shows some whitish on the inner webs of the primaries. In addition, the dark streaking on the head and breast and the grey-brown, rather than rufous-brown, breast fit Lesser better than Grey-headed.
If confirmed I guess it would be the first record for Karnataka and the most southerly record in India. I suggest you send copies of the photos to Rishad Naoroji to confirm the identification. Do you have his email address?
Regards
Tim

Hi Vijay and All!
On the face of it, this bird does look like a Lesser Fish Eagle to me. To the best of my knowledge it has never been seen this far south in the Indian Subcontinent before.
The bird is clearly an adult. The middle photo shows the undertail coverts as white but with an all-dark tail. Grey-headed Fish Eagle would show a white tail with a strongly contrasting black terminal band. Similarly, in the right-hand photo, I think there is enough of the uppertail visible that the contrasting tail colours would show if this were a Grey-headed.
Well done, Vijay, for looking at this more carefully.
Would welcome any other comments from members.
Best
Krys
