Anamalais - June 2005

Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, Anamalais is a truly alluring place. Located in the Coimbatore district of Tamilnadu, this western ghats biodiversity hotspot is full of surprises for the nature lover. Several Sri Lanka Frogmouths sit motion less here in the shola during the day along with an occasional Oriental Bay Owl. Many Wynad Laughing Thrushs can be heard in certain areas and the White-bellied Treepie is quite common. Hundreds of butterflies flying about is a common occurrence here.
Topslip is the main place of stay. Prior booking has to be done at the Office of the Wildlife Warden at Pollachi which is about 35 kms from Topslip. From Topslip a short 5 kms drive will take you to the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary which is in Kerala.
Suraj Kumaar who lives nearby at Tirupur, not withstanding his physical constraints (which he suffered several years ago in a freak accident) has made it his goal to help preserve this area. He runs a foundation called discoverwild. He is the best person to help organize a tour for those interested in visiting the Anamalais.
Suraj, Kalyan, Yathin and myself spent 4 nights at 3 locations at Topslip (June 8th to 12th ). Greatful thanks to Suraj for organizing everyting. All we had to do was shoot.
This 100+ year old building is at a very impressive location right on the Tamilnadu - Kerala border. While we were sitting and enjoying the sunset in this building, a Sloth Bear suddenly appeared from nowhere! Kalyan jumped up and ran towards it while Yathin ran away from it. It was a hiliarious moment which will remain with us for a long time!
Hope you enjoy the following images. As always any feedback is most welcome…
