Todays photo by Vijaya was of a black winged silt. I noticed that it's head was black. Is is common in India? Is this a a breeding plumage change. And is this noticed through out the year? The reason I ask is that there is a controverty in Sri-Lanka, about the black head and neck. Some birders here claim it is the Australian variation, and that it migrates to Sri-Lanka. This in my opinion is unlikely as the migration season here is also the breeding season in Australia. The confusion is made worse by the fact the black necked and headed stilt is only seen during the migration and never seen breeding here.I suspect that what the blacked headed and necked stilts we have here are migrants from India. Can any one help?

Black Winged Stilt is common resident bird in India.Yes, color pattern variations can be seen in many birds and I think that it is due to growing age and breeding plumage changes. The bird is very common but very interesting to watch and can be seen anywhere in any situation.

Black-winged Stilt with black hindneck and head has been observed in Thailand many many times. I had asked Philip D. Round about it and his answer is that it is just a color pattern variation, nothing more.

These are some examples of what we have in Thailand.

Suppalak
