There is a large unpopulated and unpolluted area(open grassland vegetation - resembling the African Plains) in the outskirts of Coimbatore which is the last home for the likes of the
- Indian Fox
- Indian coursers
- Red wattled Lapwings
- Yellow wattled Lapwings
- Grey Patridges
- Larks
- Indian Rollers
- Chestnut Bellied Sandgrouse
- a variety of Raptors and many other birds.
Even as we speak, these lands are being developed for commercial purposes. This is because of the real estate boom due to the coming of the Tidal Park in Coimbatore.
These lands were once home to the Great Indian Bustard. It is now extinct in this region.
I wish that by some magic or miracle, this last home for such wonderful life would be protected along with its little residents.

to have a copy of the slideshow of birds and butterflies. We carry out nature awareness programs at School on behalf of Madras Naturalist Society (http://www.blackbuck.org) and Nizhal (http://www.nizhaltn.org). I have downloaded the birds calls (LARK) and find it extremely interesting since it will generate interest and a kind of following for bird watching, having tested it on my 13 yr old son.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Regards,
Usha

We have found 3 positive locations around the district for the migratory birds specificaly in this season . But for the betterment of the birds shall we get concrete support from the Forest Department ? Because due to lethargic attitude of the forest dept. many illegal activities like porching is going on. And we want to do good for them by your help...Please guide us ..

Does anybody know something about people who work (i.e. ringing projects or just counting them) with Common Rosefinches - Carpodacus erythrinus (wintering birds) in India. I'd like to know more about wintering grounds. Want to get in contact with somebody via mail.

I could know the name of the bird i saw yesterday outside my window in the mango tree in Central Mumbai. It was small, greenish-blue with a red crest, red circles around its black eyes and a red beak with a red collar too and a whitish breast.Very striking. much smaller than the parrots around here.. definitely the beak was not like that of a parrot, very sharp.

I wish I could spare some time for this fabulous hobby to admire the rich flora and fauna of our country with other friendly birders! Do you have tips from your experience? There may be many more like me, who may have the inclination but not finding time and may be hesitating in asking! I am sure you all great birders must also be occupied in some venture of your own!
What equipment do you use to shoot the Magnificent birds on the film? Please suggest a camera system for a casual shooter, but reliable one. Thanks

Hi my name is Leo and I have found a chick that was discarded or fell from it's nest. We have a bird in SA that we refer to as an Indian Myna (Comman Myna), this chick seems to be a Myna but no colouuring has started. Do you maybe have photos of myna chicks so that I could confirm that this is a myna.
Thanks

Dear Sir,
I was surfing the Internet & came across your website. I would like to ask if I could use the picture of the Senegal Dove on my web site to show that specie from India. Also would you have any other pictures of that specie: male & female, showing the side of the bird & any other dove pigeon pictures. Copyright will be added to any pictures I may obtain permission to use.
The IDS site is non profit & for the enjoyment of fanciers of the doves & pigeons. Please feel free to visit the IDS web.
Thanking you for your time & help.

Good day,
My name is Maggie Lee. I am currently a graduating senior at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. In order to graduate with honors, I must complete a senior thesis project. In general, my goal is to study the effect of native bird calls on rhesus macaques in captivity. I was wondering if you could tell me which birds most abundantly co-occupy the same habitat as rhesus macaques. I have been constantly searching the web for such information and have yet not come across it. I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
Sincerely,
Maggie Lee

Dear Mr Cavale,
The more I see this site, the more I feel like coming back and checking what's new. It is a fantastic photo directory, but I wish there were notes on bird behaviour too - that would make this site a kind of one-stop encyclopedic knowledge bank for Indian birds.
I wanted to know something for myself. How do you get these high resolution pics at such small sizes? I am desperately looking for a place in Bangalore to scan some slides I recently shot in the Himalayas (not much to do with birds, though), but none of the photo shops here seem to offer this kind of scanning. I will be grateful if you suggest a place that will do a good job, or if you tell me where do get them scanned from.
Best regards,
Arijit.

Dear Mr. Cavale:
I work for a small non-profit museum in Redding,CA. and we are presently designing an owl exhibit.
We have several non-releasable owls that were injured in various ways and are building naturalistic housing for them. We will have a number of hands-on interactive displays.
I was hoping we could get permission from you to use your beautiful photo of the Eurasian Eagle Owl for our size comparision of the smallest and largest owls. We would be happy to put an acknowledgment and your copyright information on our exhibit sign.

Hi Vijay,
I have been to Kukkere Belur a couple of weekends to watch and shoot grey pelicans and painted storks. Last time I tried to locate where they fish, but without much success.
Do you know of any water bodies in the area where they fish? There is a man-made reservoir, but that doesn't seem to attract them much. And what is the best time to watch them fish - early morning, I guess? It'll be great if you can reply before the weekend - intend to go there again this weekend.
Regards,
Arijit.

I wanted to know if you have a picture of a "blue jay" I had been to a farmhouse ahead of "Paud" village near Pune and spotted a bird which was about the size of a crow. It looked grey from far, but I got a chance to look at its flight, and it has a ery beautiful combination of grey and blue on its wings.
I think this was a blue jay, wanted to confirm it. I guess it's' called "neelapankhi" in Marathi.
Your photos are amazing!

Hi Vijay,
Great Site and superb Work!
I wish that sites like these gain popularity and can contribute to an awareness of the abundant beauty around us. Hope more people realize soon the importance of conservation of our unique and beautiful flora and fauna.
I believe that show-casing and disemminating information is one of the best ways to have people aboard in the effort to protect our wild-life heritage.
I am an avid birdwatcher since '93 and am currently putting up at Andheri, Mumbai. Even near this bustling Metropolis, I have found heavenly places right out of some folklore jungles!!!
I would love to interact with like-minded people to share their experiences with me (bunrats_birds@indiatimes.com).
I appreciate the work done on the layout of the site. It's time we have greater awareness through sites like these which (to my envy), abound and cater to the birdlovers in the US and Europe.
Keep it Up and hope to have more people aboard!!!

I am in charge of a Harry Potter virtual pet shop. You may or may not know
that the Harry Potter books use owls to deliver mail and other tasks. My
virtual pet shop is part of an Online Hogwarts School, with over 3000
students. This site will allow students to select a pet and name it. It
will be their virtual pet for their tenure in the Virtual school. I do not
plan to allow distribution of the photos of owls or the other creatures and
this site is not-for-profit. Any advertising on the pages would be to other
virtual shops in the game.
I am writing to ask permission to use some of the pictures you have posted
on your website in my virtual pet shop. I will be able to put copyright
notices and prevent people from downloading the pictures (disabling
right-click).
Please send me the terms of using your photos, or a refusal if you do not
wish these photos to be used.

I got to you site by way of a link from Jim McGee's Vivid Light Photography web site.
I noticed that all your shots were taken with a 600MM Nikon Lens, and often with a 1.4 or a 2.0 converter using a fairly slow film. I saw only one where you used a flash. Can you tell me what lens aperture you normally use, and what shutter speed seems to work for you? Also, what are you using for a tripod or is the camera set on some other solid footing? The tripods I have would not hold such a long focal length, especially with a 1.4 or 2.0 converter.

Dear Vijay,
I always enjoy visiting your photo gallery. A White-cheeked Nuthatch would be very much appreciated, but any nuthatch would be great. Do you have the Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch in your area?
Sincerely,
Frank

I think it would be useful to include old names also perhaps within paranthesis so that it bridges the transission stage all Indian birders are in now.
Your comments will be highly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Natasha Waterson.I am a final year undergraduate
studying for a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Life Science at the
University of Nottingham, England. For my final year project I am
constructing a website about the conservation of savanna birds. I am looking for any pictures of
birds that you would classify as dry grassland specialists? I really
hope that this would be possible. They would only be used for the
educational purposes that I have highlighted and I of course would
credit them to you and provide a link to your site if you so wished.
Thanks very much,
Yours, Natasha Waterson

VIREO (Visual Resources for Ornithology) is a part of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, USA. The Academy is one of the oldest science museums in the United States, having been established in 1812. VIREO itself was established in 1979 as a repository for bird photographs. Our ultimate goal is to have all of the world's species on film. We currently have about 6,400 of the world's 10,000 species, including all regularly-occurring North American birds. Most of our images are in 35mm slide format, although we do have about 5,000 prints, both color and black-and-white.
VIREO licenses reproduction rights to its photographs to a wide variety of commercial clients including, but not limited to, magazines, newspapers, book publishers, and producers of CD-ROMs. When an image is licensed, VIREO shares the revenue with the contributing photographer on a 50:50 basis. For a fee, nature artists use our images for reference or renderings and copies of our slides are sold, at cost, to the general public and school instructors for presentations and lectures. VIREO is also used as a resource by ornithologists engaged in research.
While we occasionally accept 35mm duplicates from photographers, we prefer originals. Our slides are stored in refrigerated archival chambers to protect them and to extend their useful life. If a contributing photographer so wishes, we can provide professional quality duplicates at no cost.
If you are interested in submitting some of your work and/or if you have any questions, please contact me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Matt Sharp

Hi, Please visit, The World Wildlife
Fund/National Geographic Society Wild World web site
(http://www.worldwildlife.org/wildworld). This is an important conservation project
aimed at increasing biogeographic literacy and catalyzing interest in the
natural world. The main web page will be linked to 867 terrestrial ecoregion
pages and 238 Global 200 priority ecoregion pages. Every school in the
United States will be sent 10 ecoregion maps and teachers guides to get
students interested in visiting the web page. Each ecoregion page will
include educational descriptions highlighting important biodiversity
features of the ecoregion and a summary of the conservation situation. The
technical descriptions detail the biology and status of each ecoregion.
There also will be one or more photographs depicting the natural habitat of
each ecoregion. It has been a Herculean task to gather photographs of
natural habitats of the world. We cannot accomplish this without contributions from local talent. If you are interested in helping please contact us.
Thank you very much.
